Our mission is to provide humane education programs in which spaying and neutering is emphasized, to conduct outreach programs for seniors who would benefit from a companion animal, to promote TNR programs for feral cats, to facilitate low-cost spay and neuter services, and to offer adoption services for cats and dogs.
Paradise Garden Animal Haven, named after Sarah Paradisegarten Zemel, officially opened its doors on July 1, 2004. The haven is located on a thirty-five acre farm in Steuben County, not far from Corning. The renovated, heated, and secure barn is now home to the adoptable cats, who are free to roam in their spacious and sunny habitats. At PGAH, Pets Get a Home until we find their forever home.
From the beginning, we knew that the best way to make a difference in our community was to offer affordable programs and adoption services for our local residents. To that end, we have four to six low-cost spay/neuter clinics for dogs and cats every month. We welcome area residents to explore our website or to contact us for more information about this valuable program. This program is made possible through the generous cooperation of Shelter Outreach Services and Chemung County SPCA, and
a grant from the ASPCA. Please note that due to the pandemic, our funding for this program has been reduced. As of March 2021, we are not able to provide any services funded through the ASPCA grant.
All of the kittens and cats in our care receive thorough veterinary care. All are tested for FeLV/FIV, treated for internal/external parasites, brought up to date on shots, and are spayed/neutered as soon as they reach the appropriate age. We provide our cats with stimulating habitats with large, sunny windows. Our felines are free to roam, find company with a feline or human friend, or have a cat nap in a cozy spot. We house each litter of kittens independently, until they have had appropriate veterinary care.
We also encourage dog owners to contact us with any questions or concerns about theri pup's behavior. The cute behavior of puppies often turns all too quickly into the unacceptable behavior of an adolescent dog. Many dogs are surrendered to havens and pounds between the ages of six months to two years. Many behaviors can be easily corrected through the use of positive obedience training and humane behavior modification. If you are just about fed up and thinking that your relationship with your dog isn't going to work, think again. Once you've learned how to effectively communicate with your dog in a positive manner, you'll find your relationship enriched on many levels. Feel free to call to discuss your dog's behavior and to learn new ways to deal with old problems.
We give pets a safe and comfortable place to live until we can find them a loving forever home. Not all of our adoptable animals are young and beautiful, but all of them can bring companionship and joy to someone's life. Until there is a home for every animal, we stress population management. Every juvenile and adult cat and dog that comes through the haven is spayed or neutered. If the animal is too young, we make provisions for them to be "fixed" at the appropriate age. The animals at our haven have a lot of love to give! Adopting a haven animal can be one of the most rewarding acts of a lifetime!
